Fair Pay With Labour - 10 Years of the National Minimum Wage
The National Minimum Wage is 10 years old this year. The introduction of the minimum wage is one of the Labour Government's proudest achievements which has benefited millions of people. The Tories, including David Cameron, mounted a vigorous campaign to block the introduction of the minimum wage claiming various spurious reasons why it would not work. You cannot trust a future Tory Government to increase the minimum wage each year or even to keep it. Visit http://www.labour.org.uk/minimumwage to discover more about how the Tories opposed the minimum wage and how Labour continues to fight for fairness in the workplace.
New Car Park Charges Make Life a Misery for Residents
The introduction of new car park charges by Newark & Sherwood District is only going to exacerbate the problems that residents of the Sleaford Road/Newstead Avenue/Lawrence Street experience when trying to park near their homes.
Charges have been increased at all Newark car parks and have been introduced for evening and Sunday parking. Instead of paying the extra charges drivers are going to try to park for free in residential areas where parking is already a problem for residents. The incidents of dangerous parking near road junctions will also increase leading to injury and death to cyclists, pedestrians and motorists.
How long will it take for Newark & Sherwood District Councillors to wake up to the problems their short-sighted policy is causing?
Support Mark McDonald for Labour Party Treasurer
Newark CLP recently passed a resolution supporting the candidacy of Mark McDonald for the post of Labour Party Treasurer. We believe that the time is right for change in this position because we need a Treasurer that is accountable to the members and who will ask difficult questions on our behalf. This is the only way to avoid repeating past mistakes that have left the party open to criticism in the media and from the electorate.
To support Mark’s campaign please sign up at http://web.atreasurerwhocounts.org/ today.
Litter Problem Will Not Go Away
Despite several high profile stories in the local press it appears that no attempts are being made to keep the streets of Newark free from litter. Although it appears that the town centre is cleaned on a regular basis you only have to venture into the residential areas that surround it to discover that all efforts appear to be for tourists and visitors, not the residents. Indeed pavement sweepers are rarely or never seen outside of the town centre.
In some areas it is becoming impossible to walk dogs because of the large amount of broken glass that litters our pavements (most of this broken glass results from anti-social drinking by under age children). Areas that should be a joy for the public to use such as the excellent National Cycle Route that passes through the town are no-go areas for the very people who should benefit from them.
When will our Tory-controlled Local Government take action? Probably next time they need your votes...
Lawrence Street Play Area
Many of you will be aware that our CLP Chair, Laurence Goff, has been campaigning for several years for the upgrade of the play equipment at the the Lawrence Street Play Area. Finally it looks like his campaign has been successful. More news as soon as we have it.
Message from Laurence Goff, CLP Chair
Let us be proud of the achievements of this Labour Government after nearly 11 years in power. For example here are just a few of the Top 50 Achievements since May 1997:
- Introduced the National Minimum Wage and raised it to £5.52.
- Over 14,000 more police in England and Wales.
- Cut overall crime by 32 per cent.
- Written off up to 100 per cent of debt owed by poorest countries.
- Dads now get paternity leave of 2 weeks for the first time.
- Introduced the Equality and Human Rights Commission.
- £200 winter fuel payment to pensioners & up to £300 for over-80s.
- Over 36,000 more teachers in England and 274,000 more support staff and teaching assistants.
- All full time workers now have a right to 24 days paid holiday.
We need to build on these achievements by confronting the big issues across the Newark Constituency. Please voice your concerns to us so we can act.
I am 100% committed to facing the challenges that cannot be ignored e.g. gridlocked roads and our sometimes chaotic transport system; inequality and prejudice whether it be based on race, gender, disability or whatever; anti-social behaviour by the few making life unbearable for many.
Now is the time to declare your support before it is too late. Together we can make a huge difference but we need your help. Please tell us your concerns and let us have your ideas so we can campaign effectively and stop the unthinkable from happening at the next General Election!!!
E-mail me at to offer your help or to tell me your concerns and ideas.
