Dr Ian Campbell and John Mann MP

John Mann MP and Dr Ian Campbell MBE speak at the successful relaunch of the Save Newark Hospital campaign

On March 15th 2010 the campaign to save Newark Hospital was successfully relaunched at a public meeting at Chesters, Main Street, Balderton.

The main speakers at the meeting, John Mann MP and Dr Ian Campbell MBE, both spelled the need to fight the downgrading of services at Newark Hospital. The clear message being that if full A&E services are lost other services will disappear as a consequence of this.

Dr Ian Campbell agreed to head the relaunched campaign and donations were received towards a telephone marketing campaign. Newark Labour Party has agreed to fund the balance of the amount required to run the telephone campaign.

If you would like to help the campaign to save Newark Hospital please e-mail helpus@savenewarkhospital.org.uk or visit www.savenewarkhospital.org.uk.

Who really cares about the future of Newark Hospital?

Only Dr Ian Campbell can save Newark Hospital

It is extremely sad to note the lack of support from local Tories such as our MP, Patrick Mercer, and the District Council. First they swallowed the story from the local NHS Trust that services weren't at risk, then they failed to support the only two elected representatives in Newark who attempted to highlight the issue to the people.

Now Dr Ian Campbell, our prospective parliamentary candidate, has enlisted the help of John Mann, the Bassetlaw MP to ensure that the voice of the people of Newark is heard. John successfully campaigned to save vital services at Bassetlaw Hospital. His help will be extremly valuable to the people of Newark as we bid to save our hospital from the potential loss of all vital services.

Newark Labour will be holding an open meeting at 7.30pm on Monday 15th March 2010 at Chesters, Main Street, Balderton where Dr Ian Campbell and John Mann MP will be joined by other prominent campaigners as we launch a concerted campaign to save our hospital. The meeting is open to all and admission is free.

Please help us get the campaign off to a flying start by attending this meeting and showing your support for Newark Hospital.

By-Election Results

Nottinghamshire County Council - Newark East Division

Name Party Votes %
BARDILL Glenn Labour 198 17.31
COLEMAN Terry UKIP 107 9.35
HARRISON Chris Liberal Democrat 322 28.15
WALLACE Stuart Conservatives 517 45.19

An excellent campaign with a hard-working candidate and support from across the county enabled us to record the best result of any of the major parties in comparison to the June 2009 result. The inclusion of UKIP hurt the Tories most but barely affected our vote which was only 0.68% down on June 2009. A dire turnout of only 16.59% reflected the public disinterest in a by-election so soon after the main elections.

Newark and Sherwood District Council - Beacon Ward

Name Party Votes %
DAWSON Simon Conservatives 413 48.25
HOUGH Douglas Labour 147 17.17
LOGUE Declan Liberal Democrat 296 34.58

Despite the necessity of this campaign playing second fiddle to the county by-election our first-time candidate and his helpers recorded a creditable result. The turnout of 16.59% once again demonstrated both disillusionment and election fatigue on the part of the electorate.

Newark Town Council - Bridge Ward

Name Party Votes %
GOFF Laurence Indpendent Voice for Newark 280 58.58
GOLDSMITH Jeremy Conservatives 136 28.45
WETTON Clive Labour 62 12.97

We didn't campaign in what was a totally unnecessary by-election as our candidate was also the agent for both County and District candidates so the fact that 62 people bothered to vote Labour shows a small core of support for the party. Thanks to all of those who voted Labour despite the candidate being "otherwise engaged". Congratulations to our former CLP Chair Laurence Goff who finally achieved re-election as a Town Councillor. Shedding the mantle of "The Labour Party Candidate" appears to be a much bigger vote winner than any policy!!!

Dr Ian Campbell Awarded MBE in Queen's Birthday Honours List

We are delighted to hear that our Prospective Parliamentary Candidate, Dr Ian Campbell has been awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours. The award recognises Ian's services to healthcare, especially in the field of Obesity-related health problems.

Ian says "It was a great surprise to receive the award, but it does help to convince me the years of work I put in to raising awareness of obesity as a serious health risk have been worthwhile.

"Government policy has changed over the years; we’re now seeing a massive campaign, Change4Life, underway, trying to encourage parents to look after their children’s health, through improved nutrition and increased activity. I think it will have a great impact.

"However, obesity is just one of life’s great health inequalities, and as a GP I know just how important it is to improve all areas of our lives to promote good health. Better education, improved housing, more employment and stronger communities are all important.

"There’s so much we can do to help ourselves, but when we need extra support, and when we need it most, we need to have confidence that the Government is ready to help. And that’s why I joined the Labour Party. I believe it’s the only Party that meets the real needs of people, and puts improving and investing in public services at the top of the list of priorities".

Statement on MP's Expenses by Dr Ian Campbell - Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Newark

The expenses scandal brings suspicion on all those who seek to represent their political parties. As a measure of my intention to try and restore an element of trust between voters and political representatives ahead of the June 4th elections, and an eventual general election, as the Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Newark I would like to put on record the following five pledges which will govern my conduct if I am elected to Parliament.

A great many of our current Members of Parliament already embody these principles in their day-to-day conduct and their example should be recognised. No-one would like to return to a system where only those who are already independently wealthy can put themselves forward for election to Parliament, so necessary reforms to the system of MPs’ expenses and allowances should acknowledge the legitimate need for those representing constituencies outside Greater London to claim for appropriate accommodation and travel expenses. In the absence, however, of a decision on the final form of the new system, these pledges will act as my guide if I have the honour of being elected to the House of Commons.

  • • As a parliamentary candidate I will subscribe to high standards of integrity, transparency, accountability and financial economy
  • • I seek elected office not for personal gain but to serve the public and our democracy, which I consider an honour and a privilege
  • • I will publish my expenses online within a month of submitting them and publicise them annually in full to constituents
  • • I will hold regular meetings with my community and will regularly report back to my constituency party
  • • I will apply the principle of best value to all decisions I make which involve the use of public money to cover my duties, including for travel and accommodation

Although we try to contact members by e-mail where possible there is a large proportion of the local membership who don't have access to a computer. Therefore to enable us to improve communication with members (and keep postage costs to a minimum) we require volunteers to hand-deliver a small number of letters to members on a regular basis. Any help you can give us will be greatly appreciated. Please e-mail or contact Clive Wetton on 01636 671626 or 07530 454797 if you are able to help.
